We are looking for a motivated, targeted and analytical research and impact lead at Innovate Durban.

The objective of the Research and Impact Lead position is to plan, coordinate and execute research projects within Innovate Durban, as well as to manage and implement the framework and system of monitoring and evaluating the organization, measuring, recording impact and working closely with all teams to achieve desired results.

This includes, but is not limited to, market research and valuations, feasibility studies, innovation baseline studies, innovation ecosystem mapping and entrepreneurs, maps and tables funding board, innovation trends and analysis, M&E trends and updates to the existing framework, development of frameworks for new programs / projects, analysis of results and monitoring of impacts. In addition, the Research and Impact Officer will lead the research for evidence-based decision making on new strategies and programs.

The main tasks and responsibilities include:


  • Supervision and management of the Research and Impact department and projects
  • Plan, coordinate and execute research projects for the organization
  • Determine and coordinate with management and management on research priorities
  • Track and monitor research projects
  • Identify areas for improvement and develop new methodologies to achieve milestones
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in research tools and techniques
  • Analyze and resolve research problems quickly and accurately
  • Ensure that research deliverables meet quality standards and organizational requirements
  • Ensure a consistent high quality research approach in all areas Innovate Durban and integrate an evidence-based approach into decision making
  • Design tools and methods for research, data collection and analysis that cover all methods of engagement
  • Support staff in research skills and the use of qualitative and quantitative measures.
  • Identify gaps in Innovate Durban’s evidence base and recommend new research and evaluation projects
  • Present and facilitate research workshops and discussions (internal and external)
  • Develop concept papers / articles on behalf of the organization
  • Consultation and stakeholder engagement
  • Online / electronic dashboard updates and development process management
  • Prepare reports for the organization and funders / partners

Impact (monitoring and evaluation)

  • Overseeing and managing monitoring and evaluation, which includes the theory of change and the monitoring and evaluation framework
  • Provide expertise in developing / updating the organization’s monitoring and evaluation framework
  • Develop and implement systems to measure impact and evaluate results
  • Support M&E across all areas and project / program platforms
  • Work closely with the CEO and the Head of Partnerships to develop procedures for monitoring, reporting and evaluating funds / partnerships
  • Establish and maintain a robust mechanism to monitor project progress
  • Lead regular events, workshops and stakeholder assessment meetings
  • Prepare and present regular impact reports to partners, board of directors, staff and external organizations, including the production of metrics and infographics to demonstrate the impact of the project (this will include annual reports)
  • Work with the partnerships team to identify external opportunities to share a dynamic and informative impact assessment
  • Use Innovate Durban’s online tools to effectively manage M&E


  • Financial management – including developing and implementing budgets, cash flow projections
  • Key personnel management – including performance management
  • Other assigned tasks


  • An honors bachelor’s degree in economics, development studies or relevant disciplines
  • Four years of experience in managing research projects and conducting research
  • Two to three years of experience in an M&E role
  • Understanding and experience of using research methodologies, tools and techniques
  • Understanding and use of effective impact analysis and qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Advanced writing skills / experience
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (at least Microsoft Excel)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience in designing research tools
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret data
  • Great attention to detail
  • Ability to design meaningful, practical and user-friendly surveys
  • Data administration and processing skills and ability to create clear assessment reports
  • Stakeholder consultation and engagement experience
  • Engaging communication style and interpersonal skills
  • Financial management experience
  • Driver’s license and clean car


  • A master’s degree in economics, development studies or relevant disciplines
  • Cloud computing and open data tools are beneficial
  • Ability to create dynamic data visualization and infographics
  • Facilitation experience
  • Interest in innovation and the development of entrepreneurs
  • Interest in socio-economic development
