There is no standard way to deal with abandonment issues, says Dr. Corrigan. Rather, the main goals of treatment should be “to establish a stable environment and create positive experiences with the primary caregiver to strengthen attachment”.

He recommends the following therapeutic approaches to treat the fear of abandonment:

Attachment-based therapy: Attachment-based therapy uses a strong, supportive client-therapist bond to address mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Note that this therapy should not be confused with a dangerous practice called attachment therapy, which uses unconventional means such as restraint, to resolve attachment issues, warns Dr. Corrigan. “Such methods are unproven, can cause harm and lead to death,” he says.

Behavioral therapy: Behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy focused on eliminating unhealthy behaviors in order to alleviate or eliminate mental health symptoms.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) aims to distinguish negative thought and behavior patterns and replace them with positive ideas and actions.

Play therapy: Play therapy introduces toys or activities into children’s psychotherapy sessions as a foray into emotional exploration and problem solving.

Psychodynamic therapy: Psychodynamic therapy encourages individuals to recognize and resolve unhealthy conscious and unconscious thoughts rooted in past experiences by increasing self-awareness and understanding how the past may be influencing their current psyche.

Psychoeducation: In psychoeducation, a therapist involves the patient in their treatment, sharing knowledge of their diagnosis and treatment plan as a way to encourage participation and therapeutic success. This often involves CBT, group therapy and education to provide knowledge about the different facets of the disease and the method of care.

When the signs and symptoms of abandonment issues begin to interfere with an individual’s daily functioning or impact their social, academic, or occupational abilities, it’s probably time to seek professional help, explains the Dr. Corrigan. If you or a loved one have “serious crises that require a high level of supervision or safety issues such as being too familiar with strangers,” he advises talking to your provider.

Daggett challenges business and community leaders – Salisbury Post Sun, 18 Sep 2022 04:06:56 +0000

Daggett challenges businesses and community leaders

Posted at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2022

SALISBURY — More than 120 business and community leaders were challenged by Dr. Bill Daggett at the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce’s Power in Partnership (PIP) Breakfast Thursday in Trinity Oaks.

Daggett’s speech “Preparing students for their future – not our past”. Rowan-Salisbury School’s (RSS) new superintendent, Dr. Kelly Withers, made opening comments and introduced Daggett. Her first day as RSS Superintendent will be September 26.

“You have a great school district and you educate ALL the kids,” said Daggett of the Rowan-Salisbury School District. He presented several graphs showing that today’s students are very different from previous generations when it comes to using technology, family and religious life, waiting to get their driver’s license and doing not to date or drink until after high school graduation unlike previous generations. Daggett said the pandemic has made it even harder for students today. He challenged business leaders to get involved in our local schools and support teachers because “they are burnt out”.

Several business and community leaders commented on Daggett’s powerful speech.

Dr Andrew Smith (NC Dept. of Public Instruction) said: “Bill Daggett’s presentation was poignant as it provided valuable trends and data points that indicate that our current students live in a fundamentally different environment than those in the past. Through its analysis of technology trends, it is clear that these changes will only continue in the future. His presentation was important to our community and education leaders because it called for our education system to evolve to meet the needs of future students, not our past.

Jason Walser (Robertson Foundation) said, “Bill Daggett’s message was exactly what we needed to hear. It is tempting to believe that there are quick fixes for solving public education problems. The reality is that the challenges are complex and evolving. The solutions will also be complex. As Dr. Daggett noted, the foundation of success in education always rests on reading, writing and arithmetic. It’s essential. But that’s nowhere near enough in 2022, 2025, or 2035. Dr. Daggett’s assessment of the real-world skills that will be needed for next-gen success was daunting and thought-provoking, but also incredibly helpful for us to reflect on. as we re-imagine what public education looks like in Rowan County. Dr Daggett’s recognition of the adaptability and flexibility that future education systems will need made me appreciate once again how lucky we are to have the opportunities afforded to us here through the Renewal and to a wonderful new superintendent who is not afraid of change.

Greg Alcorn (Global Contact Services) was the event sponsor and said, “His message was ‘tough love’ but also inspiration in what we can do. Like Bill, I’m a big fan of our public schools and I’m optimistic about the future.

Alisha Byrd-Clark (Gemstones/Compass) said, “One thing Dr. Daggett told me is that we need to prepare students for their future, not our past. We have to support our teachers because they are mentally and physically exhausted. We can help them focus not only on how they teach, but also on how they mix the dough. This includes helping the community with interpersonal skills that will take them beyond the classroom. »

Daggett is the founder of the Successful Practices Network and the International Center for Educational Leadership. He recently co-chaired AASA LEARNING 2025: National Commission for Student-Centered, Equity-Oriented, and Future-Oriented Education and now leads the National Demonstration Network for AASA. He is the author of 26 books and is recognized worldwide for his proven ability to move K-12 education systems toward more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students. For 30 years, he criss-crossed our country, as well as the industrialized world, leading education reform efforts to effectively prepare students for their future.

The next Chamber PIP date is October 20 with Empire Hotel development speakers Josh Barnhardt and Brett Weaver. For more information, contact the Rowan Chamber at (704) 633-4221 or

Happermations flashcards teach toddlers about consent and self-love Thu, 15 Sep 2022 14:56:11 +0000

All bodies are cool.

It’s 3-year-old Dea Butler’s favorite phrase from her colorful collection of flashcards.

But this isn’t your average positive affirmations pack for kids.

The set was designed by her mother, sex educator Erica Butler, to teach “sex-positive” sayings primarily to toddlers, but also to children up to age 7.

The cards, or “Happermations,” facilitate healthy sexual development by engaging young people in age-appropriate conversations about bodies, consent, identity, emotions and self-love, according to Butler. .

“It’s something you should feel safe talking about,” said Butler, 36, of the Southeast Side, who owns her own sex education consulting firm, Happ E. SexTalk.

“The more (children) know about their bodies, and the more they understand about consent and boundaries, the less likely they are to be approached by a predator,” Butler said. “Someone looking to take advantage of a child is looking for someone who doesn’t have anyone in their life who talks to them about these things. They’re looking for someone who can be easily groomed or manipulated.

Flashcards can be purchased for $35 at or at Columbus locations including Replenish Spa, Cover to Cover Children’s Books, and the Columbus Museum of Art Gift Shop.

Since its launch in May, Butler has sold over 250 collections worldwide.
