1 in 10 breakdown policies do not cover running out of fuel

One in 10 breakdown policies do not cover drivers who run out of fuel, according to an analysis.

Some 89% of UK breakdown insurance policies analyzed by financial reporting firm Defaqto will cover customers who have run out of fuel.

Brian Brown, Consumer Credit Expert at Defaqto, said: “With the current panic of fuel purchases across the country, it’s much more difficult to refuel your vehicle.

“Inevitably, we are likely to see more people running out of fuel while driving. If this happens to you, and you have breakdown coverage, your provider will most likely be able to help you by towing you to a gas station.

“Just because they’ll tow you to a gas station or give you enough fuel to get there, there’s no guarantee the gas station will have fuel. And they won’t tow you around the country looking for fuel, so you still have to be careful.

“Even if you don’t have a stand-alone breakdown insurance policy, you may find that it is included in your vehicle insurance or even included in addition with your bank account if you have a premium account. However, not all policies have this coverage, so it’s worth checking out before making a claim.
